The Atlantic Kelp Company was founded in 2009 by David Owens. The company started by selling fresh seaweed. This was harvested by David off the coast of Anglesea. Harvesting seaweed is not for the faint hearted as the water is very cold and although ideal for Kelp does not make for a comfortable dive unless wearing a full diving suit.
The company moved to dried seaweed when it became clear that the health benefits were not diminished. Dried seaweed also keeps as well as dried herbs and because it is already prepared can be conveniently added to a variety of foods.
How It began
David Owens interest in the use of seaweed as a food enhancer began when he was looking into the micronutrient benefits of freshly squeezed juices. Processing and cooking vegetables can reduced the nutrional content of food. The juicing of vegetables, provided done properly, allows the benefits of eating large quantities of fresh veg concentrated into a much smaller glass of fresh juice.
He came across the benefits of seaweed and was surprised at how hard it was to obtain in the UK. Subsequently, after much research, he discovered Kelp was the most readily availble seaweed in British coastal waters and decided to start a company to promote and sell the use of seaweed and its health benefits.
